I half agree with Shaun about the space at the top. I don't know why but it feels "right" to move it down SLIGHTLY. So I have. Just to clarify. I think this layout needs to be fixed width due to the image. perhaps about 1000px in width. A max width could also be a possibility. The content divs will not be fixed size and will expand according to the content.

The design looks better for the suggested amendments; I still have reservations about the showcase images though.
I think one of the reasons that the 'autumn' style image works so well is down to the colours captured within it; the affect is lost I feel on the greener image.
I am keen to hear other comment...
I agree there is too much gap between the images. I will sort that out shortly.
In response to Sue's comment about shape. I think a square thumbnail is best as it caters for both horizontal and vertical images without compromising the design. Just to clear up that design will make use of some kind of light box effect.
As for the header image. They were origionaly just meant for place holders. It would be nice if the students could come up with some similar highly coloured and high contrast images to place there. I am not entirely comfortable signing over photographs from my personal portfolio unless I need to. Also to note, the image will change for each page.
I didn't realise that the image(s) were your own; I had assumed that they were from a stock photography site!
